What Is Whois Data?
Every registered domain name carries a public record with its registry: when it was created, when it expires, who the registrar is, which nameservers serve it, and status codes that control things like transfers and locks. Traditionally you queried this over the Whois protocol; today the same data is served over RDAP(Registration Data Access Protocol) in structured JSON, straight from the authoritative registry.
Whois data is used to investigate domain ownership, verify sellers before buying a domain, track down abuse contacts, and assess how established a website is. A domain registered 20 years ago tells a different story than one registered last month.
